An 11-year-old girl from Nuapada suffering from Thalassemia has undergone free bone marrow transplant in Mumbai through the efforts of Marwari Yuva Manch Khariar Road Jagriti branch. The girl has now returned home after a successful bone marrow transplant at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. Adequate blood production has started in his body and blood transfusion has been stopped. The girl’s parents told that free treatment worth Rs 1 crore eight lakh was provided. For this he has expressed gratitude to Jagriti Shakha. It may be noted that Jagriti Shakha had organized a Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) test camp at Agrasen Bhawan on 23 January 2024 for children below 11 years of age suffering from sickle cell and thalassemia. Children from Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh had reached the camp. The real siblings, parents etc. of the victim children were tested. The sample was sent abroad for testing. Nine children were 100% HLA matched for free bone marrow transplant (BMT). Rachna Jain, project director of BMT camp, said that four children had left for Mumbai. Of these, a girl from Nuapada has returned after successful BMT. A child from Gariaband has also undergone successful bone marrow transplant and is going to be discharged soon. Nuapada’s two children are in Mumbai for 45 days, their bone marrow transplant will be done soon. A girl from Ranchi will leave for Mumbai this week. As soon as the documents are completed, the remaining children will also be sent to Mumbai. It is noteworthy that the number of victims of this disease is high in the region. Children need blood every day. To meet the need of blood, the branch has been organizing blood donation camps from time to time. In case of emergency, blood is also being arranged by immediately contacting the donor. But this is not the solution to the problem. In such a situation, the branch gathered information regarding permanent treatment of these diseases. Bone marrow transplant costs lakhs, most people are unable to afford this expense. In such a situation, arrangements were made for free treatment. Rachna Jain told that Rs 10 lakh was given from Coal India for bone marrow transplant. Five lakh rupees were given through Ayushman card and some amount from PM Relief Fund. The remaining expenses were borne by the hospital and the local institutions. In this way this treatment became possible free of cost. The girl’s parents thanked Jagriti Shakha for this. He told that the girl had to undergo blood transfusion repeatedly for the last nine years. The cost of treatment was said to be Rs 50 lakh, but now the treatment is provided free of cost through the branch. During this, branch president Sangeeta Agarwal, Santosh Agarwal, Richa Agarwal and others were present. Biswanath Samal’s report from Nuapada
