
Mishra, a resident of Sinapali village in Nuapada district, has dedicated his entire life to tribal education and preservation of folklore. His work serves as a strong bridge between tribal knowledge systems and mainstream literature. He is the only Indian to receive the UNESCO Prize for Literature, a global recognition of his extraordinary contribution to cultural preservation. Through decades of continuous field research, Mahendra Kumar Mishra has recorded and preserved the voices of Odisha’s tribal communities. He collected his myths, epics, discourses and folk songs and saved the oral tradition from generation to generation from extinction.
