Nuapada: On the occasion of Road Safety Month, Nuapada Police has launched an innovative initiative. Road safety awareness is being created with the help of actors playing the roles of Yamaraj and Chittagupta. The program started from the first of this month and it has created a special impact in the rural areas. These cultural performances are attracting public attention and spreading road safety awareness. These demonstrations are organized in public places like markets, huts and important streets. Motorcyclists are encouraged to wear helmets and not to drive under the influence of drugs. Four-wheeler drivers are also encouraged to fasten their seat belts and drive safely. Nuapada Youth Guard Superintendent Omrit Pal Singh is spearheading this innovative effort. He has initiated many efforts to make roads safe for commuters. He directed all police stations to take two major steps, namely law enforcement and awareness creation. He said that road safety should be a mass movement and every citizen should be responsible for driving his own vehicle. The use of helmet and seatbelt should be made a habit for all. SP is focusing on creating awareness among students, especially by contacting school and college students to create awareness. The program has been launched in collaboration with other departments like Regional Transport Officer, RTO. All local organizations like teachers, artists, students, media, shopkeepers, local leaders, panchayat members, self help groups are participating in this program. Gradually changes are seen in Nupada Road. It is worth noting that from the day Omrit Pal Singh joined as Superintendent of Police in Nuapada, along with improving law and order in the district, the police has been suppressing the illegal trade of contraband, illegal trafficking of workers, young women, children etc.
