Cough Syrup Turns Deadly: Union Health Secretary Calls Emergency Meeting – Odisha Breaking News, Odisha News, Weather Updates, Odisha News Live

Cough syrup has turned deadly. After the deaths of 11 infants in Madhya Pradesh, the Central Government has gone into action mode. The Union Health Secretary has called an emergency meeting regarding this issue. Reports say that at 4 PM today, a video conference will be held with all State Health Secretaries and Drug Controllers to discuss the matter. Meanwhile, several states have already banned the sale of cough syrup. Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu have imposed bans, while other states are still investigating the issue. The sale and distribution of cough syrup have been restricted. Samples from various regions are being collected, and the government is taking necessary action. Laboratory tests have revealed that these syrups contain dangerously high levels of toxic chemicals. There are already restrictions on giving such syrups to children below two years of age. In Madhya Pradesh, the doctor who prescribed the syrup to some children has been arrested. Several other states have also begun investigations into the matter. Particularly in Odisha — in towns like Baripada and Rairangpur of Mayurbhanj district — the use of these cough syrups is increasing rapidly. It has been observed that many young people are consuming the syrup as an intoxicant. As a result, the youth, often referred to as the future of the nation, are being pushed toward addiction and a bleak future. This has become a serious matter of concern. Intellectuals and citizens are demanding that the administration take strict measures to regulate this issue. Similarly, some intoxicating medicines are being sold without a doctor’s prescription, which is negatively affecting society. Hence, it is crucial that the Drugs Department takes immediate and serious notice of this problem.
